Sunday School: exam prep 15 July, 2012
While we’ve nearly knocked off all the texts, it’s a good idea to make sure we’re going into the exam (just around the corner) with the best possible chance.
Paul Grover is a former English teacher and education lecturer at Charles Sturt University.
He joins Libbi Gorr to talk about how you can best prepare for the exam.

Sunday School: Section C of the exam: 1 July, 2012
Section C requires students to analyse the ways in which language and visual features are used to present a point of view. Section C is worth one-third of the total assessment for the examination. Read the opinion piece Chickens Range Free and then complete the task below. Write your analysis as a coherently structured piece of prose.

Expect dynastic rivalries, succession play and a plot to over throw the king.

-How can we narrow down such a broad discussion?
– Two threads in the text: events in Woomera detention centre and Melbourne / life in Mazar-e-Sharif and the conflict of Afghanistan. How can both threads be drawn together to discuss conflict?
– Students need to draw on the fact that at the centre of conflict is identity: is it transportable? Can we take it with us from one culture to another?
– Writing style: how can the students draw on this in a discussion of conflict?
