Christian College Geelong Senior Library: Lovers of literature

Are you looking for an alternative to Twilight and all the other vampire books that are everywhere at the moment?
For those of you who would like a change, try a parody (a. A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule) instead. We can recommend these two as good reads and funny as well.

The Reformed Vampire Support group

reformed vampire‘If being a vampire were easy, there wouldn’t have to be a reformed vampire support group.’

Nina became a vampire in 1973 when she was fifteen, and she hasn’t aged a day since then. But she hasn’t had any fun either, because her life is so sickly and boring.
It becomes even worse when one of the other vampires in her therapy group is staked by a mysterious slayer. Threatened with extinction, she and her fellow vampires set out to hunt down the culprit. Trouble is, they soon find themselves up against some gun-toting werewolf traffickers who’ll stop at nothing.
Can a bunch of feeble couch potatoes win a fight like this? Is there more to being a vampire than meet the eye?

“it managed to hold my attention the whole way through. The comedy aspect of it is actually pretty great – Jinks doesn’t go with the whole romanticized version of vampire-dom that is so widespread nowadays. Instead, she portrays vamps as sickly moaners with a depression complex who need a support group (sort of like vampire AA) to get through life”    Good Reads

Nightlight: a Parody

twilight-parody-nighlight_a“The basic storyline of Nightlight is similar enough to mock Twilight, yet different enough to be its own work of fiction.  Belle Goose moves from Phoenix to Switchblade, Oregon to live with her father Jim, a window wiper.  Belle has an obsession with dating a vampire. At her new school she meets Edwart Mullen, a super-hot (yet fictitious) computer nerd with such a lack of social skills, one could argue he has negative social skills. After noticing a few events, such as Edwart  leaving his lunch untouched, Belle realises that Edwart is a vampire. Clearly this girl is a master of the scientific method.”

“Nightlight is hilarious! The book is like a Mel Brooks movie. It’s totally cheesy, it’s a bit stupid at times, but overall, it is amazing! Some parts will make you laugh out loud. ”    3 evil cousins.
